Mixer drive replacement at a wastewater treatment plant

How can an obsolete, discontinued drive in an industrial installation be replaced when the available installation space is severely limited? See how we selected a Chiaravalli planetary gearbox for a wastewater mixer while maintaining the required operating parameters and installation compatibility.

Challenge

At a wastewater treatment plant, a drive unit that had been operating since the 1990s failed and was no longer available on the market. The system consisted of three interconnected gearboxes and powered a wastewater mixer.
The design presented additional challenges:

  • limited installation space,
  • an unconventional shaft design with a movable flange,
  • the need to maintain the required technical parameters, including a gear ratio of i=17000,
  • the requirement for easy installation and removal without modifying the mixer structure.

Solution

A drive system based on a Chiaravalli CHPL18003 CMC planetary gearbox was proposed, combined with a CHM50-60 worm gearbox and a KC12022 chain coupling.
The solution was selected to:

  • meet the technical requirements of the existing installation,
  • enable installation within the limited available space,
  • reduce the risk of installation errors,
  • remain competitive in terms of both price and delivery time.

Result

  • successful replacement of the discontinued drive with a new solution,
  • maintenance of the mixer’s required operating parameters,
  • adaptation to the existing structure without modifying the installation,
  • selection of the Archimedes solution over competing international suppliers.
